HFF Flycast, October 2021
Volume 14, No. 3, October 2021
The Covid virus struck again last month and the long-awaited trip to Dunmore to celebrate the opening of the 2021 trout season had to be cancelled as Port Macquarie went into a seven day lockdown. Fortunately our Club had arranged for the trout release to take place on Monday 27th September, the day before the lockdown was declared. This month we include a report of the release from the “A Team”. “B Team” will follow up in November with a report on their adventures during the day.
In this issue we continue last month’s article featuring fly-fishing in the Wessel Islands , North East Arnhem Land.
Our “Know your Fish” species for this issue is another lesser known species and, although usually associated with exotic locations, has been found as far south as Newcastle. Although I have never caught one with a rod and line I can personally vouch for the nasty territorial attitude of this species from several close encounters of the diving kind in PNG and the Red Sea.
The titan triggerfish is usually wary of divers and snorkelers, but during the reproduction season the female nests in a flat sandy area and protects it against intruders including unwary humans who venture into her domain.
The territory around the nest is roughly the shape of an inverted cone and divers should swim horizontally away from the nest rather than upwards as they only remain in the territory. If a triggerfish is seen to raise its dorsal spine and swivel its chameleon like eye, resembling a crazy Marty Feldman, move away. The teeth are designed to bite off coral and can easily bite out a chunk of wetsuit and flesh. Fingers should be kept well clear of the mouth.
