HFF Flycast, February/March/April 2025
Volume 17, No. 2, Febuary – April 2025

Yes, I know—we’ve slipped into “tri-monthly” (try monthly?) territory. This issue was meant to land in early April, but life, as it does, threw a few curveballs. The President was not impressed and gave me a solid dressing-down. He even threatened to replace me. I told him that wasn’t a threat. Still, I’ve promised to tighten things up going forward—so here’s hoping the next issue arrives on time.
(That said, if anyone feels inclined to take over the role, feel free to put your hand up—just in case).
Now, onto what actually matters.
Many of you have been following the difficult journey of our dear friends Dawn and Ron. I’m very happy to report that they’re now back home, clearly enjoying the comfort of familiar surroundings. Even better, Dawn recently heard from her surgical team: the cancer has been completely removed, and no post-op radiation is needed. That’s fantastic news, and I know the whole Club joins me in wishing them both a strong and steady recovery.
On the events front, the Harrington Fly Fest was a real stand-out. Great workshops, valuable info, good company—it had it all. If you missed it, make a note for next March when we plan to do it all again. In this issue, you’ll find a detailed report and some cracking photos—many of which were taken by Vaughn Hagelstein from the Coffs Club. A big thank you as well to Anthony Heiser for letting us ‘borrow’ some of his excellent write-up. Much appreciated, gentlemen.
Casting practice with John has also resumed at Lake Cathie. The most recent session on Monday, 12 May is now in the books. Keep an eye on your inbox for upcoming dates—these are always a great chance to sharpen your skills and catch up with the crew.
A quick update on reading material: Ken Holley has asked the Library to subscribe to FlyLife. Hopefully, it’ll be available soon for those who want to dive into some quality fly-fishing content during their downtime.
One small gap in this edition: there’s no report for our planned April outing to the Harrington Lagoon. The fish were there—we know this thanks to Fly Fest—but the weather wasn’t on our side. Officially postponed, but that didn’t stop Rodney, Pauline, and myself from turning up anyway. No fishing, but a good natter, a nice cuppa, and a few melting moments were enjoyed (mostly by Rodney).
Thanks again to everyone who sent in photos and outing reports. Your contributions keep this Newsletter alive—please keep them coming.
Until next time (which, I promise, won’t be three months late).
David
May your waders never leak, and you always have a tight line.
