Fed’s Carp Dry Fly Variant is a simple but highly effective surface pattern designed for targeting cruising carp. Built around a buoyant foam post and a natural white saddle hackle body, it sits high on the water while presenting a subtle silhouette that carp find difficult to ignore. The use of invisible mono thread keeps the fly clean and uncluttered, allowing the natural materials to stand out.
Whether you’re sight-fishing to tailing carp in shallow water or casting to cruising fish on calm lakes, this easy-to-tie pattern deserves a place in your fly box.
Fishing Tips
This fly is designed to be fished on the surface to actively feeding carp. Cast well ahead of cruising fish and allow the fly to sit naturally without excessive movement. Small twitches can sometimes trigger a take, but patience is often the key. Because the pattern is highly buoyant and easy to see, it also makes an excellent indicator fly when fishing shallow water.
Materials
- Hook:Scud hook, size 10
- Thread:Invisible mono
- Post:5 mm yellow foam strip
- Body:White saddle hackle with the fluff retained
Tying Instructions

- Apply a thin coat of Sally Hansen’s Hard as Nails to the hook shank and allow it to become tacky.
- Attach the invisible mono thread and cover the hook shank with smooth, even wraps.
- Tie in the white saddle hackle by the tips at the bend of the hook, leaving the fluffy base intact.
- Advance the thread to a point just behind the hook eye and tie in the yellow foam strip, leaving a short section extending forward over the eye.

- Secure the foam with a half hitch to keep it upright while you form the body.
- Palmer the saddle hackle forward with close, touching turns until you reach the base of the foam post.
- Wrap the fluffy base of the hackle around the foam in a figure-eight pattern to create a dense, buoyant thorax, then secure the stem with several tight thread wraps.
- Trim the excess hackle stem close to the tie-in point.

- Finish the fly with a double half hitch (or whip finish) immediately in front of the foam post.
- Trim the foam post to the length of the hook.
- Apply a small drop of Sally Hansen’s Hard as Nails to the thread head for durability.
