Steindl’s Green Mudeye Variant

The Green Mudeye was developed by Adrienne and Peter Scheindl around 1960 to imitate the Hemi-cordulia tau or more commonly known as the Mudeye found at Lake Eucumbene in NSW.

What follows is Paul Fedeles’ variant:

Materials

  • Hook – Size 8 to 14
  • Thread – Black
  • Eyes – Melted Mudflap
  • Tail – Black make up brush
  • Body – Olive variegated chenille
  • Case – Black chenille
  • Legs – Medium TFD Black bug legs

Tying Instructions

  1. Secure your thread to the hook, and build a bump where you want the eyes to sit.
  2. Tie in the eyes and fix with a small drop of Sally Hansen’s.
  3. Cover the hook with thread to the bend in the hook.
  4. Return the thread to the mid point.
  5. Take a small amount of make up brush, measure its the length of the shank. Trim.
  6. Tie it on the hook at the mid point.
  7. Return the thread to the eye and tie in the black chenille.
  8. Repeat the step with the olive chenille.
  9. Return the thread to behind the eyes.
  10. Wrap the olive chenille to create a fat body.
  11. Tie off behind the eyes.
  12. Fold the black chenille over the top of the body and tie it off in front of the eyes.
  13. Cut the medium bug legs into quarters.
    Tie two pair of legs on both side of the fly behind and under the eyes.
  14. Create a head and whip finish. Small dab of Sally Hansen’s to secure the thread.
  15. Trim the legs to just past the point of the hook.
