Red and Yellow Butt Cary Special Variants

The Red Butt and Yellow Butt Cary Special are celebrated variations of the classic Cary Special, a fly that has earned its place as a reliable “searching pattern” among anglers. Rick Passek, known as the FlyFish Fanatic, emphasises the simplicity and effectiveness of these flies, making them ideal for beginners and seasoned fly fishers alike.

The addition of a yellow or red butt to the traditional Cary Special not only enhances its visual appeal but also significantly increases its ability to attract fish. This subtle yet impactful modification adds a splash of colour that seems irresistible to many fish species, making it a go-to pattern for those who want to maximise their chances of success on the water.

In a humorous nod to the creative process behind fly tying, Paul “The Fed” Fedeles admits to being inspired by this fly in the creation of his own Red Tag Soft Hackle Bass Fly.

“I plagiarised everything; I used a larger hook, and added a bead and lead-free wire.”

While he jokes about “plagiarising” the design, this approach underscores the collaborative and adaptive nature of fly fishing, where each tier builds upon existing patterns to create something uniquely effective. The Cary Special, Cary Special, whether tied traditionally or with a red or yellow butt, remains a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness that defines the fly-fishing community.
