Fed’s Extended Bass Fly

Fed’s Extended Body Bass Fly, another creation by the Club’s fly tying guru Paul Fedeles, showcases an innovative approach to fly tying, incorporating the extended body technique popularised by Steve Garza of flytyingtex.com. This fly design boasts a meticulously crafted extended body, offering a lifelike appearance in the water, thereby enhancing its effectiveness in enticing bass.


Materials

  • Thread: Black woolly nylon.
  • Gill Spot: Red woolly nylon.
  • Hook: Size 6 scud.
  • Eyes: Gold bead chain.
  • Body loop: Fish braid line.
  • Body: Orange and black variegated chenille.
  • Tail: Sculpting Flash fibre.
  • Ribbing: Grizzly Coachman brown hackle.

Tying Instructions

  1. Tie on the bead chain eyes.
  2. Cover the hook with thread.
  3. Tie in the fishing braid in a loop – little less than two times the length of the body.
  1. Place the tail flash in the loop of line.
  2. Connect the tail and loop in a guillotine.
  3. Tie in the hackle feather at the base of the twine.

If you have no guillotine you can clip your hackle pliers to the tail for weight and wrap upside-down.

  1. Tie on the chenille on the hook at the base of the twine.
    You will need at least 25cm length.
  2. Wrap the chenille up the twine in tight loops.
  1. Go one loop over the flash.
  2. Wrap the chenille around the eyes and tie it off.
  3. Palmer the hackle to the eyes and tie it off.
    Leave space for the gill spot.
  1. Create a head and whip finish.
  2. Wrap red thread behind the eyes and three-turn whip finish.
  3. Seal the tail with two drops of UV resin.
  4. Apply UV resin to the head.
  5. Rough trim the tail.
