Beatty’s EZY Prince Nymph Mutant Variant

With Beatty’s EZY Prince Nymph Mutant Variant Paul Fedeles brings his unique twist to Gretchen Beatty’s EZY Prince Nymph. While the original video – from Beatty’s Fly Tying Friday, 10 December 2021 – provides a comprehensive guide, Paul’s written steps and material selection add a fresh perspective to this effective pattern. He recommends first watching the video to grasp the essence of Beatty’s technique before delving into his alterations.

In Paul’s mutated version, the materials undergo a subtle yet significant shift. He introduces different materials for certain components, emphasising his personal preferences and adaptations. By deviating from the traditional recipe, Paul encourages fly tiers to experiment and tailor the pattern to their liking. His written steps complement the visual guidance of the original video, offering an alternative approach that sparks creativity and innovation in the art of fly tying.

Materials

Paul’s Mutated Version:

  • Hook Size 14 nymph (not 2X)
  • Bead – Orange and gold
  • Tail – Brown X-lon
  • Rib – Fine wire
  • Body – Peacock herl
  • Wing – White poly yarn
  • Hackle – Brown wet-style collar

Tying Instructions

  1. Put the bead on the hook.
  2. At the starting point, cover the hook with thread, leaving a space behind the bead.
  1. At the starting point tie in two strands of Z-lon.
  2. Trim the length of the gap.
  1. At the starting point tie in a piece of fine wire on the back side of the hook to the bend.
  2. At the starting point tie in four strands of peacock herl.
  1. Wrap the herl to the bend in the hook and back to the starting point.

The front to back and back to front technique is used to compensate for poor quality peacock herl.
  1. Reverse rib the herl with the wire and tie it off.

(The next step was moved to after the herl.)
  1. Tie in the white Poly yarn wing behind the eye.
  2. Leave room for the hackle.
