HFF Flycast, January/February 2026

Happy New Year to all our members, and welcome to the first edition of Flycast for 2026.

One of several fish caught (on fly) on Castaway Fishing Charters

The year has already started at a busy pace for the club. Since the Christmas and New Year break we have enjoyed two well-attended outings. The first was to Harrington, followed by a trip to Hat Head. The fishing proved challenging on both trips, but the good company and time on the water made them worthwhile.

Members have also been making good use of our regular casting practice sessions. Several anglers preparing for the upcoming Weipa trip have focused on heavier rods and lines. As always, we thank John for generously sharing his knowledge and helping members improve their casting skills.

February also brought a productive working bee to tidy the club trailer. Rodney organised the day and Ron and Dawn kindly hosted it at their place. Around a dozen members turned up to lend a hand. By the end of the day the trailer looked far better than when we started. Pauline and Rodney also kept everyone well fed with a great lunch. Thanks to everyone who contributed their time and effort.

Our fly-tying evenings at Ron and Dawn’s continue to be a popular social gathering. These nights offer a great chance to swap ideas, tie a few flies, and enjoy good company. We also appreciate Ron and Dawn for opening their home to the club—even if the local mozzies sometimes join in.

Brian Henderson instructing Gary Pearton

Sadly, we also acknowledge the passing of long-time member Gary Pearton. Gary and Cheryl lived in Sydney, but they remained valued members of the club. Whenever they visited Port Macquarie, Gary joined in club activities with enthusiasm. We extend our sincere condolences to Cheryl and the family.

In this issue you will also find highlights from recent outings and photos from club events. We have also included some useful tips for fishing Lake Keepit.

Thank you to everyone who contributes stories, photos, and time to make this club such a great community. We hope you enjoy this edition of Flycast and look forward to seeing you on the water soon.

Tight lines,

Ben & Fleur
